According to a recent survey by Travelness, the Thai capital was ranked as the most visited city in the world in 2023. The survey was conducted in June and it asked people for their views on 20 of the most popular cities in the world. Whilst other cities had their pros and individual charms, Bangkok always won the hearts of its many visitors, and for good reason!
With approximately 22 million international visitors per year, Thailand generated over 1.12 trillion baht (US$32 billion) from 1 January 2023 to 24 July 2023. What’s more, the country is well on track to reach around 25 million foreign visitors which will potentially generate 2.38 trillion baht (US$64.50 billion).
Discussing the splendour of Bangkok, Travelness commented, “Enjoy the usual city comforts of megamalls and modern spaces before turning towards its collection of golden temples and shrines. Follow your nose to Bangkok’s countless street markets stuffed with spicy, sour, sweet, and salty flavors, then hop on a boat to reach their floating markets.”
Other Cities That Have Been Ranked As The Most Visited in The World?
Paris came in second place with 19.0 million international visitors. With its elegant boulevards, scenic River Seine, and the striking Eiffel Tower, there’s always a reason to flock to Paris. London came in third place with around 19.09 million international visitors. Immerse yourself in the historic streets of East London or simply be entertained on a river cruise on the Thames. The great thing about London is that it is one of the most cosmopolitan and multicultural cities in the world, which is why you’ll find some of the most diverse range of cuisines right in the heart of the capital.
Dubai came in at fourth place with 15.93 million international visitors whilst Singapore and Kuala Lumpur came in at fifth and sixth place respectively. We also have New York in seventh place and Istanbul, Tokyo and Antalya in eighth, ninth and tenth place respectively.
So, what’s so great about Bangkok?
Well for starters, Bangkok is by far one of the most affordable cities in the world. What’s more, with a range of places to visit that are within close proximity, you can do a lot in a day in Bangkok.
Bangkok is a melting pot of different cultures, backgrounds, and cuisines. With millions of people visiting every year, it lives up to its reputation of being one of the most interesting places in the world. Being the capital of Thailand, there’s usually a range of activities to keep the most excited tourist busy.
If there’s one thing Bangkok is famous for, it’s the many floating markets scattered in and around the capital. Floating markets have fast become a tourist hotspot, thanks to the unique atmosphere of shopping from a boat. I mean, where else can you buy a snack from a boat passing by? Whilst it can take a while to reach some of the best floating markets, and prices can be rather expensive, where else will you get the opportunity to do something like this?
The food is another reason why Bangkok is extremely popular. The natural and organic flavours are mixed to provide a diverse range of dishes ready for every foodie! One such place that does street food best is the Haroon Mosque area located in Bangrak. Every Friday, locals set up street food stalls outside their homes from 10 AM – 2 PM. From Gaeng Gary (Thai chicken curry) to Khao Mok (Thai Biryani) and Roti Mataba (flatbread with minced meat) to Khanom Soyi (Thai Pudding), the street food you find here will keep you satisfied.
For some retail therapy, Bangkok knows how to deliver. We suggest the Pratunam Market which is the country’s largest retail clothes market. Haggling is welcomed within the maze-like streets that are filled with cheap and colourful clothes. But it’s not just about shopping here in Pratunam Market; visitors will be able to see a local way of life at its finest. Pratunam Market is the best place to witness how people shopped decades ago, from vendors pushing trolleys to locals haggling.
