Empowering Communities Through Sustainable Waqf

The International Waqf Fund is redefining the traditional Islamic endowment model, ensuring long-term impact through ethical investments and sustainable development projects. CEO Dr. Mohammad Alsaghir shares his insights on the Fund’s mission, innovative approach, and future goals.

What is the mission and vision of the International Waqf Fund?

The Fund’s mission is to advance Waqf models that drive sustainable development and social justice. Its vision is to position the Waqf sector as a global leader in development. Unlike traditional charities, the Fund invests donations in Sharia-compliant, low-risk assets, ensuring long-term impact. By generating sustainable returns, it provides continuous support for rightsholders, making every contribution a lasting legacy.

How is the Fund modernising Waqf to address today’s challenges?

The Fund integrates innovative fundraising methods, aligns projects with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, and develops supportive legal frameworks. Technology, such as blockchain, enhances transparency and efficiency in managing assets and donations. Additionally, the Fund empowers communities through sustainable livelihoods, education, and healthcare, ensuring Waqf remains relevant in addressing global challenges.

Can you share recent projects that showcase the Fund’s impact?

In 2024, the Fund launched impactful projects (utilising the profits from their investments) across 10 countries. In Afghanistan, it invested (allocated) £50,000 to support 100 vulnerable households with business development. In Somalia, it renovated 38 classrooms, benefiting 550 orphaned children. The Greenhouse Project in Albania provided 11 greenhouses, promoting sustainable agriculture. These initiatives, funded by Waqf Shares, highlight the Fund’s commitment to education, economic empowerment, and sustainable living standards.

What strategies ensure Waqf investments provide long-term benefits?

The Fund prioritises low-risk, Sharia-compliant investments and reinvests returns to maintain growth. Projects align with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, ensuring lasting impact. Community empowerment through vocational training, education, and healthcare is central to our strategy. By leveraging technology for transparency and efficiency, the Fund maximizes the effectiveness of its investments, ensuring sustainable benefits for generations.

How does the Fund maintain transparency, and how can people support its mission?

The Fund employs blockchain technology for efficient asset management and adheres to strict governance frameworks, with regular audits and published financial reports. Individuals and organizations can contribute by donating to specific Waqf Shares, supporting fundraising campaigns, volunteering, partnering with the Fund, or leaving a legacy gift in their will. These efforts help sustain long-term, impactful projects worldwide.

What are the Fund’s key goals for the future?

The Fund aims to expand its reach by increasing investments in education, healthcare, and livelihoods. We will enhance our use of technology, such as blockchain, for greater transparency and efficiency. Additionally, we plan to forge new partnerships with global organizations to broaden our donor base and extend our project impact. These initiatives will ensure sustainable development and long-term benefits for communities worldwide.
